"The August-to-October mating season helps explain the annual increase in deer fatalities," says John Krause, a state Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologist.  As bucks chase does from the hills it means disaster on Bay Area roads.  September's count was 155, compared to 20 in February.  A doe lies dead on Interstate 680 just before being picked up by a Caltrans worker at the Diablo Road on-ramp in Danville.  A buck suffered the same fate on the other side of the freeway, but he was hit by a car in the fast lane.
